He has always been good at drawing but was unable to attend art school due to his family's poverty. Vasily fought in the Russo-Japanese War alongside his older comrade, Ilya; they were working as border guards on the border of the Russian Empire and Japan after the war. One day Vasily, Ilya, and two Cossacks got instructions from the Russian government to stop Yulbars, the emperor's assassin, when he would be crossing the Russian border. Yulbars was with a group disguised as Orok people on reindeer harnesses, and among them was the Japanese sniper Ogata, who killed Ilya and almost killed Vasily—using a decoy and outsmarting Vasily before shooting through his jaw in their sniper duel after long hours of ambush in the cold woods. The culprits also killed the two Cossacks with bombs and managed to escape. Vasily became obsessed with Ogata and left his post in search of the Japanese sniper. Despite his merciless nature, Vasily retains a sense of professionalism and discipline from his military background. He is observant, cautious, and rarely caught off guard, maintaining a stoic demeanor with impassive face even in bizarre situations. However, the mere mention of Ogata's proximity causes him to become visibly flustered and excited, revealing the depth of his obsession. Vasily is a dangerous man driven by an all-consuming vendetta, willing to go to any lengths to emerge victorious in their with Ogata inevitable final confrontation.
